Chalkida is the city of the strait. The Euripus, the forty-metre channel between Euboea and the mainland, reverses its current several times a day in a way that preoccupied Aristotle, and the city's seafront — a row of ouzeri and fish tavernas — is built right on top of it.
For Athens, an hour south, Chalkida is the classic Sunday for fish: the drive, the bridge, a table at the water, ouzo, fish by the kilo, home. That explains the seafront's fame, the weekend prices, and why Chalkidians themselves eat fish somewhere else.
What follows is what to order, where to sit and what it should cost.
Why is the fish at the strait different?
The Euboean Gulf is an enclosed gulf with currents, and its fishing tradition is one of small fish and shellfish: picarel, sand smelt, sardines, bogue, mussels and prawns from the northern gulf. Large fish come in, but small fish are what the city knows how to fry.
The Chalkida seafront — from the bridge to the Red House — is an unbroken row of ouzeri with tables at the water, and the ritual is the same in all of them: ouzo, small fried fish, prawns saganaki, a salad, and then, if the table is four, a fish by the kilo.
- Fried picarel and sand smelt: the first plate in every ouzeri, with lemon.
- Prawns saganaki: prawns in tomato and feta, the commonest plate on the seafront.
- Mussels steamed or saganaki, from the mussel farms of the northern gulf.

What should you order in a Chalkida ouzeri?
Start with ouzo and the small things: fried picarel or sand smelt, a plate of mussels, prawns saganaki, a village salad. That is a full meal for two at €30–40 and the way the seafront itself eats on a weekday.
Fish by the kilo — sea bream, sea bass, red mullet, white bream — is weighed in front of you and grilled over charcoal, and is the Sunday dish. Ask the price per kilo before it is weighed, and ask to see the fish; in a proper place both are taken for granted.
Where do you eat: the seafront, the market or Nea Artaki?
The seafront is the seat: tables at the water, the strait in front, the bridge to the right. It is also the most expensive corner of the city, with the same prawns saganaki two to three euros above the lanes behind it. On weekdays the gap is smaller and the table easy.
Nea Artaki, ten minutes north, is the fishing village where Chalkidians go for Sunday fish: tavernas on the beach, fish from the harbour's boats, and kilo prices below the city's. The covered market in Chalkida, in the morning, shows what was caught the night before.
- Seafront, from the bridge to the Red House: ouzeri at the water, the city's seat.
- Lanes behind the seafront: the same fish, two to three euros less a plate.
- Nea Artaki: fishing-village tavernas, ten minutes north, the locals' fish.

What should a meal in Chalkida cost?
An ouzeri table of small plates for two comes to €30–40 in total, that is €15–20 a head, and a fish by the kilo for four adds €40–60 depending on the species. Nea Artaki is about a fifth cheaper for the same fish.
The weekend is dearer and full; a Wednesday is the same fish with fewer people. Kitchens open at midday and run late, so a quiet-hour booking through an app like Filotimo takes half off the food. The table gives the ranges.
| Area | Best for | Per head |
|---|---|---|
| Seafront, tables at the water | Ouzo, small fish, a view of the strait | €17–24 |
| Lanes behind the seafront | The same meze, without the view | €14–20 |
| Fish by the kilo, anywhere | Bream, bass, red mullet on charcoal | +€10–15 |
| Nea Artaki | Fishing-village tavernas | €13–19 |
| Centre, at lunch | Cooked dishes for residents | €8–11 |
| Weekend, seafront | Full, booking, Athens prices | €20–28 |
Chalkida is Athens's nearest fish and knows it. Go on a weekday, sit at the water for the current, start with the small things, and if you want the locals' fish, drive ten minutes further to Nea Artaki.
