Most budget advice for Santorini is a list of cheap places, which is useful for about one meal. What people actually need is a shape for the day: where breakfast comes from, what lunch looks like, and which single meal is worth spending on.
Here is that shape, with numbers. It assumes shoulder season and two people, and it produces a food budget of roughly thirty to thirty-five euros a head per day without eating badly once.
How much is breakfast on Santorini?
Skip the hotel buffet if it is not included and skip the caldera cafes entirely. A bakery in Fira, Karterados or any village sells a cheese or spinach pie for two to three euros and a coffee for two.
The same breakfast sitting down in a village square — Pyrgos, Megalochori, Emporio — costs the same three to five euros, with a table, service and shade. The identical order at a café on the caldera rim is ten to fourteen, and the coffee is no better.
How much is lunch on Santorini?
Lunch is where the island's best value sits. Inland tavernas serve the day's cooked dishes — fava, beans, stuffed vegetables, whatever is in the tray — for nine to twelve euros with bread, and they are finished by mid-afternoon.
The other good lunch is the harbour. The tavernas at Ammoudi below Oia and at Vlychada on the south coast cook what came in that morning, and a shared plate of small fish with a salad and half a litre of house wine lands at fourteen to eighteen euros a head at midday — roughly a third of what the same fish costs on a caldera terrace at nine in the evening.
- Village taverna cooked dish with bread: nine to twelve euros.
- Gyros or souvlaki in Fira: four to six euros.
- Small fish and a salad at a harbour taverna: fourteen to eighteen euros.

What does the sunset cost?
The caldera sunset is the thing people come for, and it is available for the price of a drink. Find a terrace in Oia, Imerovigli or Firostefani, order one glass of wine each at eight to twelve euros, and watch it.
That is the whole trick. Dinner at the same table would cost forty to seventy euros a head for food that is not the point of the evening. Buy the view, then leave.
How much is dinner on Santorini?
After sunset, move inland. A taverna in Pyrgos, Megalochori, Emporio, Karterados or Messaria will serve four or five shared plates with house wine for fifteen to twenty-two euros a head, and the cooking will be better than what you would have paid triple for on the rim.
Order the island's own things: fava with capers and onion, tomato fritters, white aubergine, a salad, some fried fish. That is a proper Santorini dinner and it is not an expensive one.
Where do discounts fit, and where do they not?
In May, June, late September and October, restaurants on Santorini have real off-peak hours and are willing to fill them. That is when early booking and off-peak discounting works: Filotimo halves the food bill at partner restaurants during their off-peak hours, with drinks charged normally and a booking fee starting at six euros for one person.
Coverage is deepest in Athens and expanding across Greece, and island availability is thinner and seasonal, so check the restaurant list for Santorini rather than assuming. In August, when nothing on the island is quiet, the dependable saving is the geographic one: eat where the buses go, not where the cameras point.
What is the daily total?
Breakfast four, lunch ten, a sunset drink ten, dinner eighteen. That is forty-two euros a head for a day that includes the caldera at sunset and a proper dinner, against perhaps a hundred and twenty for the same day taken entirely on the rim.
Cut the sunset drink and book the dinner into a quiet hour and you are at twenty-three. Neither version involves eating badly, and both involve eating more Santorini food than the expensive one does.
| When | What | Per person |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Bakery: coffee, bougatsa or koulouri | €3–5 |
| Lunch | Gyros, or fava and salad inland | €8–12 |
| Sunset | One drink, caldera view | €10–16 |
| Dinner | Village taverna, shared plates | €15–22 |
| Day total | — | €36–55 |
Santorini on a budget is not a smaller holiday. It is the same island with the sunset bought as a drink and dinner eaten where the buses go — which is also where the fava, the tomatoes and the people who grow them are.
